BAAN Awarded Funding for ‘Eyes On’ Project

Bristol Airport Action Network is proud to announce that the group has secured funding for its new ‘Eyes On’ project from the Grounding Technologies programme run by the Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio.

Eyes On is one of six projects which aim to build on a rich tradition of activism and thought in the West of England region to address the climate crisis. The Eyes On project will focus on developing an online website to call Bristol Airport to account on some of the key the planning conditions that were agreed as part of the expansion granted in 2022.  In particular it will aim to give up to date information on how many night flights and shoulder flights and total flights have taken place.

The project was sparked by the case of Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) that was found to breach planning rules last summer by operating 747 more night-time flights than allowed. It was the monitoring by local campaign groups that exposed this breach of 25% extra night flights by the airport.  The ‘Eyes On’ resource will help to monitor flights and alert residents and authorities if this type of breach is about to happen at Bristol Airport.

Grounding Technologies is a six month programme run by Bristol+Bath Creative R+D and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). It invites those tackling climate and environmental issues in the region, along with artists and makers to explore the role of creative technology in bolstering climate action.
