This website is designed to help us keep our eyes on Bristol Airport.
Permission to expand the airport in 2023 was given subject to legally binding planning conditions. Elsewhere in the country airports have broken their planning conditions so we feel we need to keep a close eye on Bristol Airport.
We are tracking the timing and total numbers of aircraft take offs and landings in each 24 hour period. Each calendar year they cannot legally exceed:
You can also follow the project on ‘X’EyesOnBAL and Instagram and BlueSky
We are using a dark screen background and scrolling (rather than separate pages) on this website to keep it to the lowest possible carbon footprint.
‘Eyes on Bristol Airport’ has been by developed by Bristol Airport Action Network co-ordinating group (BAANcc) in partnership with Grounding Technologies which was funded and supported by Bristol and Bath Creative R+D, a first-of-a-kind collaboration between the region’s four universities – UWE Bristol, Bath Spa, the University of Bath and the University of Bristol – and digital creativity centre Watershed.
A longer term vision for this project is to develop the Eyes On tool nationally, and make it available as open-source software so that other airport groups can hold their local airport to account.
In a separate strand of our work, BAAN is also working with other anti-expansion groups to develop a national ‘No Airport Expansion’ Campaign and raise public awareness of the environmental impact of expanding airports. The campaign is challenging existing planning laws in relation to airport expansion to ensure we have the best chance of retaining a liveable planet.

BAANcc is motivated by concerns about the impacts of increasing flying in Bristol and the UK.
Those living near to the airport and under the flight path can experience direct impacts such as:
However, the greatest concern for us and our followers, is the wider impact of increased fossil fuel usage on the climate crisis: the extra two million passengers permitted under these expansion plans will lead to a million extra tonnes of carbon being emitted each year (for context this is twice the amount produced by all the road transport in Bristol).
Grounding Technologies produced this film which summarises the Eyes On project and the impact of the Grounding Technologies funding.

When Bristol Airport first produced their Master Plan 2040 for consultation purposes about further expansion to 15mppa, BAAN produced a counter argument against expansion in an 'Alternative' Master Plan. After the consultation ended Bristol Airport then dropped the bombshell that they would apply for a CPO (compulsory purchase order) to...Read full article

We hold a range of events which may be of interest to Eyes On followers and these can be found in the News section.
Flight Radar 24 enables you to track a particular plane in real time. This may provide evidence of an issue for a complaint.
If you are unhappy with any area of the Bristol Airport’s delivery you can make a complaint, and the airport has a responsibility to publish the number of complaints received on a regular basis.
You can either complain about a particular flight (was it more noisy or disruptive than usual) or make a general complaint about any area (about their environmental plans, their future goals, their presentation of material -greenwash?) or about any aspect of their operations now or in the future.

We have a vision to make this tracking tool available to other local airport groups, to help them hold their local airport to account in following its planning conditions.
Our motivation for doing this was hearing how GALBA revealed that Leeds Bradford had exceeded their permitted Night Flights.
If you would like to find out more about how to adapt the Eyes On tool to your local area please get in touch.
